Learn more about transcription and read some century old Ypsilanti gossip!
Jennie (Pease) D'Ooge born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1857, married Michigan State Normal College Latin Professor Benjamin D'Ooge in 1885, and kept a daily journal from 1886 - 1934. Accounting of daily life in Ypsilanti, traveling with her young family to Europe in 1904, and summering in Northern Michigan, it is a comprehensive illustration of one woman's life over fifty years.
During this program, participants will learn more about transcription, the role it plays in archival work and historical research, and how EMU's Archives are approaching the transcription of these diaries as a community learning experience. Using Jennie's journals to practice, participants will get tips from professional transcribers on reading older documents, interpreting cursive handwriting, and best practices for handling materials taped or glued into journals or diaries. Come for the Ypsilanti history, the transcription practice, or the century old hot-takes from Jennie herself! EMU Undergrads are eligible to receive LBC L3A credit for attending.
