Community Scanning Day

Digitize your family and local history!

Scan important family photos, correspondence, and documents.

Use a professional-grade document scanner—on loan from the Library of Michigan—to make high-quality scans of documents 8.5 x 11" (the size of a standard sheet of paper) or smaller, including photographs, correspondence, and vital records.  

Here's what to bring for scanning:

• Family photos 
• Correspondence, postcards, newspaper clippings
• Other unique documents size 8.5 x 11" or smaller, especially those with significance to your family or local history

What to keep at home (these kinds of documents can be scanned any time via our standard free scanning services):

• Business or legal documents that don't pertain to family or local history
• More content than can reasonably scanned, one document at a time, in fifteen minutes (more than 15 to 20 items)
• Documents that may be too fragile to survive being handled for scanning, or documents that may be dirty or contaminated

Scans may be saved to a USB flash drive or sent to an email address as .pdf files.  Attendees are welcome to bring their own USB Drives, but drives will also be available for purchase at the library for $5-$10. 

PLEASE NOTE: This event is meant to help the community digitize documents to preserve family and local history. We can not answer questions about the validity or use of scanned documents for legal or commercial purposes.
